Where To Go
Travelling In Iceland
Travelling in Iceland always depends on the weather. In the winter most of the roads are closed because they are deemed inpassable either because of snow or rain.
Here I will attempt to bring you not only the latest weather news, but this page is mainly for telling you about the different areas to explore in Iceland, and I don't mean the things you read about all the time. I mean stuff that may not have struck you in a guide book or on tv.
So sit back and let me plan your holiday for you.

Earthquakes and warnings
The image below which will be updated on a daily basis tells of all the Earthquakes in Island. For a more detailed image click on picture.
There is still a general warning for Mount Hekla, which is ready to erupt, it is advised that you check with the local information office before attempting to climb the summit
Borgarnes
Borgarnes lies on the western coast of Iceland, about an hour and half north of Reykjavík. It's population is 1800 people and has some of the most stunning views in the local area.
It is a good base of operations for a few days stay in Iceland, with many of Icelands main points of ineterst within a couple of hours drive.
It is also adviced that when travelling to Borgarnes to avoid the tunnel like the plague, not only is it overprices it is also incredibly dull. What is much more beautiful to see it taking the hour long journey around Hvalsfjöður. Some of the scenery is truly jaw dropping and you will not regret it, however the route is best taking in the summer months, as normally it can get a little windy, so unless you are a confident driver, only take this route in the best weather.
Also within a hours shot of Borgarnes is the stunning glaicer of Snæfellsjökull the myhtical entrance to the centre of the earth according to french author Jules Verne. On a clear day you can see the glacier itself from Reykjavik, but there is nothing like looking at it up close.
Also Akranes is just around the corner, not somewhere you would want to stay overnight at, but well worth a look, the rock and mineral museum and folk museum are fascinating on a geology and history perspective, and they have one of the best football teams in Iceland. But other than that there is little here to get excited about..
Near also to Borgarnes is the small villages of Husafell and Skalholt both of which have intersting tales to tell. But more importantly are the twin waterfalls of Barnafoss and Hraunfoss, one is a long elegant stretch of waterfalls, not too high, but stunning, and the other is a mad rush of water that twists and turns underneath rock and over it also. They are both in the same river and the distance between the two is about a 2 minute walk...yep walk. These two different types of falls can in fact be seen from each other.
Staying in Borgarnes is easy, you should always head to the main hotel in the town Hotel Borgarnes...see the article on this page, but there is also a couple of other places. Ensku Husinn (The English House) has a very beautiful view, but it is a little out of the main town, and you would have to drive to the town itself. There is also a new Icelandair hotel just by the Golf course, also a small drive from the main town.
Home Of Egils saga
Travelling in Iceland was a dangerous occupation, and none so more than travelling near Borgarnes. For one of Icelands most notorious and dangerous Vikings lived there. Egil Skallagrimsson.
He was a nasty piece of work and according to legend killed his first man at the age of five, and continued to kill all the way through his life. There are several plagues and images of Egil himself scattered throughout the town, and it is worth hunting around to see what bits of infomation you can dig up, for Egils Saga is without a doubt in mind one of the best, if not the best saga to be read.
Bars In Borgarnes
Well I should have said Bar. As the only one open now is the ever popular Dussabar as it is known.
Run by the impossing figure of Dussi himself who speaks remarkable english, you can go in for a quick beer, but don't expect it to be too quick as Dussi will regail you with tales of adventure and excitment in the borgarnes area.
It is very worth talking to the man, as he enjoys the company of new people and always makes an effort to talk to them.
Hotel Borgarnes
Hotel Borgarnes as followers of this site over the years will know is where it all started for me. Under the guiding influence of Petúr Geirsson and later his son Jón Petúrsson this 3 star hotel is a pleasure to visit and dine at.
In all fairness the hotel does have a couple fo bad points, the bar is not somewhere you feel competely comfortable to relax in after a hard days travelling, and the view ain't that great..overlooking some housing. But it is value for money, and the service is always first class.
